Task 3 / Design
After analysing the design of our choice in Task 2, we will need to produce a work of design, inspired by the one we had analysed, or as a reaction to it. And we should apply our knowledge of design principles in our creation.

Sketches 01:
In this sketch, each paper man will be holding hands with one another, symbolizing unity and harmony, and they feature four colours, each representing a race. I aim to form a beautiful and powerful representation of diversity, inclusivity, and togetherness. Besides, there will be a lot of colourful stars surrounding the paper man.
I have come out with two different colour options. First is the pink background, which creates a contrast with the green movement lines; Next is a dark background that highlights the details of the elements.
Sketches 02:
Fig 2.2 Sketch 02 |
Four paper men representing the four races stood on the field, looking at a shining star in the starry night. The large star symbolizes a beacon of hope, a shining light that guides us towards a future filled with promise and possibility.
A child in a red cloak gesturing a peace sign with a giant star behind him. The red cloak symbolizes justice, while the star represents hope, positivity and a bright future.
Design Process:
This is my design version 1.0. Dr. Yip said the colour of the star could be more yellow and try to adjust the composition slightly downward.

Rationale:
For my chosen Goal 16, "Peace, Justice, and Institutions," there are
many ways to achieve peace, such as promoting anti-war and anti-abuse
movements. As such, I have decided to create a piece of art that
embodies Racial Peace. At first, my Sketch 03 theme was Justice
Rising, and after getting some suggestions from my lecturer, I found
that I could incorporate race into it.
In my work, there are four children representing four races. They wore red cloaks, a symbol of justice, and one of the boys made a peace sign. The reason why everyone wears the cloak of justice is that justice and fairness are universal regardless of race. Anyone with a just heart can be a hero. In addition, there is a giant star behind them, I chose the star as my element because it is a symbol of positivity, happiness and hope. It guides children of all races to hope for a bright future that they can share together.
I intend to infuse my artwork with a positive energy that will inspire feelings of hope and optimism. During my research on the topic, I came across many artworks that were sarcastic and pessimistic, which made me feel a little blue. Being an optimist, I aim to create a piece that will uplift viewers and leave them with a sense of joy and expectation for the good things. To convey positive energy and optimism, I opted to create a visual representation in a style that is reminiscent of a child's artwork. I intentionally chose a simplistic art style and colourful, highly saturated tones as my overall theme in order to capture the essence of a child's ingenuous and pure spirit.
I used two of the design principles in my piece, which are contrast and scale. There is a colour contrast between pink and green liquid shapes to achieve a rich colour tone. Regarding scale, which is the size of the star, I made it intentionally large throughout the piece to create a sense of visual impact.
Feedback
Dr. Yip said I need to have a clear idea of what I want to achieve with my work. The art style is secondary, primary is the purpose that I wanted to bring out. She suggested I make a mind map before creating my work.
Besides, she said if I go with Sketch 03, she would suggest that I draw more children instead of just one, which might be more cohesive.
