  Lectures

Contrast
- usually to guide the viewer's eyes to the focal point, or to highlight important information.
Gestalt Theory
A law of human perceptions when we perceive objects.
- Principles of Similarity:
Our brain would craft a link between similar elements as a complete picture, shape, or group, even if those are separated.
- Principles of Continuation:
The human eye follows the paths, lines, and curves of a design, and prefers to see a continuous flow of visual elements rather than separated objects.
- Principles of Closure:
The human eye perceives complete shapes even if the visual elements are incomplete
- Principles of Proximity:
Objects that are in proximity tend to be more related than those that are far apart.
- Principles of Figure/Ground:
Objects are instinctively perceived as being either in the foreground or the background.

Emphasis
- it is used to create dominance and focus in a work.
- various elements can be used to create emphasis, such as shape, colour or value etc.
Balance
The distribution and visual weight of elements in a composition.
- Symmetrical Balance:
The work of art is the same on one side as the other, a mirror image of itself, on both sides of the centre line.
- Asymmetrical Balance:
It occurs when you can different visual images on either side of a design, and yet the image still seems balanced.
- The Golden Ratio:
Also known as the golden proportion, it can be used as a guide to create visual balance in a composition.
- Rule of Third:
A method of organising the composition into areas in a way that brings balance, satisfaction, and an ongoing sense of purpose.

Repetition
- the repeated use of particular elements of visual art in the composition.
- it creates rhythm and pattern within the work, so on increases visual excitement and activeness.

Movement
- the way a design guides the viewer's gaze along a specific path.

Hierarchy
- the choreography of content in a composition to communicate information and convey meaning.
- it guides and navigates the viewers through the following information in sequence.

Alignment
- the way the different elements in a design are lined up with each other or a particular part of the page.
- create a sense of unity and cohesion, which contributes to the design's overall aesthetic and perceived stability.
Harmony
- the visually satisfying effect or combining similar or related elements.

Unity
- it refers to the repetition of particular elements throughout the design.
- they share a common identity with others and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme.

Scale
- the size and dimension of figures and forms relative to a specific unit of measure.
- it is used to specify or illustrate details based on the relative size of objects.
- useful in hierarchy as users will pay more attention to big things than to small things.

Proportion
- the relationship of two or more elements in a composition and how they compare to one another in size, colour, quantity, degree, setting, etc.
- the effective use of proportion in design often results in harmony and unity.
Symbol
A sign, shape, or object that is used to represent sth else.
- Pictorial Symbols:
Images and simplified graphics.
Fig 1.15

- Abstract Symbols:
It can look like the object they are representing but have fewer details.

Fig 1.16

- Arbitrary Symbols:
It has no resemblance at all to the objects or ideas they represent. It is invented with the meaning constructed.

Word and Image
- the combination of text and images leads to bringing out the precise concept in design work.
- suitable typeface strategic positioning of the type will result in visual hierarchy and balance in the work.

  Instruction

Task 1 / Exploration

Pick a goal from the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG), and then choose an art/design work which is related to the goal of our choice. Explain why we chose it and what design principles we observed in that art/design piece.

GOAL 16: Peace, Justice And Strong Institutions

This goal aims to promote peaceful and inclusive societies, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

'Tolerance' by Edel Rodriguez 2017
1500 * 2161px
Digital Art

I selected this piece of work because it impressed me the first time I saw it. In the artwork above, we can see the two knives kissing with their blades facing away from each other.
This let me feel a sense of violation since knives give us the first impression that they are dangerous, and they are often associated with violence and blood (besides cutting vegetables). Yet the artist created harmonious figures with these knives, from this, we can immediately get the thought that tolerance leads to peace, and it links me to Goal 16, due to the differences in tolerance, conflicts can escalate from minor quarrels to full-blown wars.
Hence, one of its targets is to achieve tolerance, which plays a crucial role in creating peace.

In this work, I observed two points of design principles that are used. Balance——knives are of the same shape and size; Contrast——the colour of the knives, which is black and white, creates a strong contrast between them.

  Feedback

  General
The design principles note & images need to provide the resource link. The explanation should be more focused on the reason why we chose the work, and the observation of design principles should be just listed.

  Specific
For the explanation, the reason I chose this artwork and how it related to the goal must have a connection, the sentences need to change a little bit so it might be more reasonable.
