Visual Analysis

- a method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements and principles.
- identify and explore the characteristics of example material and relationships within the context in which they were produced and encountered.
- Recognize and understand the ideas, content or meaning conveyed by the work.

The visual analysis included three phases:

Phase 1 - Observation
Carefully look into the visual elements in a composition and describe them in your own words and opinions.
Phase 2 - Analysis
Combine the identified elements with design principles and evaluate their effectiveness on viewers.
Phase 3 - Interpretation
Understand the background of the work, the meaning and the purpose of creation.

Task 2 / Visual Analysis

This task requires us to access, investigate, document and analyse the existing art/design work we have selected in Task 1.
'Tolerance' by Edel Rodriguez 2017

The artwork that I refer to above has a vertical orientation and showcases a pair of knives that seem to be in the act of kissing, with their sharp edges pointed in opposite directions. The placement of these two elements is highly intentional, as they are aligned at the centre of the artwork, creating a prominent point of interest that immediately captures the viewer's attention.

I observed two points of design principles in this artwork.  The first is balance, which is a symmetrical balance that involves creating a mirror image of a visual composition. Therefore, it brings a sense of stability and harmony to the work, resulting in a more orderly appearance. In addition, there is a contrast in the piece. The colours of the knives are intentionally designed in black and white to provide a striking visual comparison, emphasizing the differences between the two colours.

The author used red as the background colour, which served to amplify the importance of crucial elements and draw the reader's attention to them. The subtle use of red made the work more visually compelling and engaging.

Although it is a simple art form, it effectively conveys information to viewers, as in this fast-paced era, few people are willing to stop and read through a mass of text. This artwork depicts knives that do not harm each other and are in harmony, conveying the message of "tolerance" and the importance of peace, as per Goal 16. The simplicity of the art does not mean it is perfunctory; what matters is how the information is conveyed quickly and effectively.
