Task 2 - Editorial Illustration (Decisive Moment)
Editorial illustrations are produced for newspapers, magazines and websites to add a visual dimension to a piece of writing.
We must create a minimalist editorial illustration about an 'Urban Legend' using Adobe Illustrator for this task. We can find a related article/story that discusses Urban Legends, whether local or international.
**The art style must be Art Deco.
This is my research after choosing urban legends:
'Toire no Hanako-san'
Also known as "Hanako of the Toilet".
It is a Japanese urban legend about a ghost young girl named Hanako-san who haunts school toilets. There are many versions of the story including that Hanako-san was a child who lived during World War ll and died in an air raid while hiding in a school toilet during a game of hide-and-seek; that she was murdered by someone; or that she committed suicide in the school toilet due to bullying.
She is commonly described as having a bobbed haircut and as wearing a red skirt or dress.
To summon Hanako-san, according to folklore, one must go to a girls' toilet on the third floor of a school, knock three times on the third stall, and inquire if Hanako-san is present. If Hanako-san is there, she is expected to respond with some variant of "Yes, I am." Depending on the story, the individual may then witness the appearance of a bloody or ghostly hand. Hanako-san or the hand may then pull the individual into the toilet, which could lead to hell.
Rationale
I looked for some inspiration from Pinterest and collected them for my reference. The reason I chose these colour tones was to create a scary and creepy atmosphere, like what we usually see in horror movies. In terms of art style, I would incorporate some Japanese-style elements to align with this Japanese urban legend.

Then I digitise it in Adobe Illustrator, which is a bit different from my sketch. I added Hanako-san's silhouette so it would look better and creepier rather than just a hand.

Week 7
Exercise Part
Transparency Gradient & Noise
This exercise aims to learn how to create textures by adding to our illustration using the Grain Effect combined with linear, radial and freeform gradients.

FEEDBACK
Week 6 (Physical)
Overall is okay, but something should note is that the illustration should be in Art-Deco style and the canvas must be a portrait.

REFLECTION
Experience
The topic of this task was quite fun as we needed to research an urban legend, try to capture the turning point in this story and finally sketch out an illustration.
Observation
In this task, I observed the characteristics of the Art-Deco style while browsing for reference. I discovered how they used simple geometry and clean lines to create their pieces.
Findings
Doing research and making moodboard is important so that we will better understand every step we are taking and won't digress.
