01💬 Introduction to Intercultural Design

Design Significance
Designers need to be aware of cultural nuances, symbolism, and context to create inclusive designs that resonate with diverse audiences.

Design Sensitivity
Cultural sensitivity in design goes beyond aesthetics and encompasses functionality, usability, and the overall user experience.

Cultural Sensitivity Awareness:
- Symbolism and Imagery
Certain symbols and images may carry different meanings in different cultures (e.g. emoji)
- Colour Consideration
Colour can have cultural significance, and their meanings may vary across different societies.
- Typography and Language
Considering language variations and ensuring accurate translations is crucial for reaching diverse audiences.

Addressing Cultural Sensitivity:
- Inclusive Design
Designers should strive to create products and experiences that are accessible and inclusive for people from various cultural backgrounds, including those with different abilities and needs.
- User Research
Conducting user research, including ethnographic studies and user testing across diverse groups, helps designers gain insights into cultural preferences and behaviours.
- Localization
Adapting designs to specific cultural contexts through localization can enhance the relevance and acceptance of a product or service.
- Cultural Awareness Training
Design teams may benefit from cultural awareness training to develop a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives and sensitiveness.

02💬 Culture, Design & Research

Culture and design are inseparable, we need to be able to understand and express both as part of our creative skills development.

Importance of Research:
As a designer, we should embrace the habit of research as part of our work process.
- Unite theory and practices of design to establish our project rationale.

Research Process:
1. Before writing the proposal
- Collecting data through published and existing resources from websites.
- Sketch out a proposed artwork based on the data collected.
2. After producing the proposal
- On-site observation
- Interviews / Surveys
3. During the creation of artwork
- Final design production of the artwork (processes/team contributions)
- Data collected through published and existing resources (way of instructions/safety&regulations)

  Instruction

  Task 1 / Proposal
The general theme is 'Cultural Sensitivity in Design'
We are to study a cultural phenomenon or a particular subculture that is perceived as 'sensitive', then, frame our study within the chosen theme. Try to convey this cultural aspect without altering the actual facts but within a presentable interpretation and adaptation that raises awareness from the viewers.

  Weekly Progress
Week 1
Personal Findings
Before grouping, we can do self-study and research, not only for preparation but also to enhance our understanding and gain knowledge of cultural sensitivity in design.

Week 2&3
Group Research
As we joined the Osaka study trip, our topic was designated to be within the scope of Japanese culture. To decide on the topic, we have decided to let each group member explore a topic of their choice, and then we will vote on the chosen topics.
I selected 'Kawaii Culture' as my topic.

Our group also came up with other themes, as follows:
1. Kimono
2. Japanese wedding customs
3. Japanese packaging design
4. Lantern motifs
5. Japanese monsters and supernatural beliefs
We finally decided to use Japanese monster culture as the theme and combine it with the packaging design.

Afterwards, we need to do a PPT for our final proposal. To ensure that tasks are completed efficiently, we decided to divide the work among group members.

Task division:
1. History of Yokai Cultures - Ruthlene Chua
2. Introduction - Angel Tan
3. Presentation - Zhao Yi, Jie Xuan
4. Sketches of Product Outcome & Rationale
  • Bookmarks - Rachel Yeo
  • Face Masks - Ruthlene Chua
  • Packaging - Yi Xun
5. Visual References - Everyone
6. Video Edit - Yi Xun
7. Credit & References - Everyone

  Reflection

  Experience
Before starting this task, I explored the definition of 'Cultural Sensitivity' in order to enhance my understanding of this theme. I learned that acknowledging and respecting the diversity of cultures is an integral part of conducting a successful business deal. When we show genuine interest and appreciation for the customs and traditions of our clients, it helps us establish a strong and trustworthy relationship with them. This not only ensures that the deal goes smoothly but also lays the foundation for a long-term business partnership, rather than offend their culture and lead to tragedy.

  Observation
Through the opportunity to decide on a topic for this task, I observed and learned a lot about Japanese culture that I had never known before. Not only broadened my perspective but also enriched my understanding and appreciation for their rich and fascinating culture. I was captivated by their unique customs and traditions, which left me with a profound respect for their way of life.

  Findings
By our chosen topic "Japanese Yokai Culture", we found that this culture has had a profound impact on local life and even further affected the international community. The Japanese yokai, supernatural creatures that have long been associated with horror and fear, have been converted by creative and imaginative artists and designers into adorable and charming images that have won the audience's hearts everywhere. It inspired us how carefully they explored the background of the yokai and preserved their characteristics while changing their appearance.
